About this whisky
  • Malt type: Single Malt
  • Region: Scotland

Glenturret is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland officially opening in 1763 but known to have been in the hands of illegal distillers a few years prior. In 1981 it was only the second distillery to open its gates with a visitor centre. This 12 year old from the core range was discontinued in 2003 with the 10 year old so this bottle is getting rarer and rarer. Upon opening notes of sweet fruit juice and honey, also some wildflowers, the sweetness stays with the first taste on the palate along with oak and a slight peaty undertone which stays for the long finish and becomes more gingery and fiery. A nice addition to cold winter nights.

Historical Context

Glenturret’s operational history is lengthy, though for much of the late 20th century, its output was primarily dedicated to its role as a key component in The Famous Grouse blended Scotch.

The modern positioning of the brand is directly attributable to its post-2018 acquisition, particularly its association with the luxury goods house Lalique. This change in ownership mandated a shift toward technical luxury production. The subsequent adoption of NCF status and higher bottling strengths was a necessary response to reposition the brand from a utilitarian blending component to a connoisseur-grade single malt.

Technical Specification & Variant Map

The annual release structure fundamentally dictates the nature of the 12 Year Old, allowing for deliberate, batch-specific adjustments in blending and proofing each year.

The marginal fluctuation in bottling strength—a difference of 0.2% ABV between the 2024 (46.4%) and 2025 (46.2%) releases—is demonstrative of a craft-focused approach. This minor variance confirms that the Master Blender is fine-tuning the final proof point based on the specific character of that year's cask inventory, aiming for optimal flavour intensity and texture retention.

The cask strategy involving Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez (PX), and American oak is vital, ensuring a multi-layered flavour profile that delivers rich, warming spice from the European sherry casks and lighter citrus and vanilla tones from the American oak.

Packaging & authenticity checklist

The brand's association with Lalique requires packaging to meet exacting luxury standards.6 Procurement must ensure high fill levels and pristine box condition. Crucial authentication checks involve verifying the stated release year and confirming the prominent presence of the NCF and Natural Colour statements on the label.

Regulatory/terminology notes

The NCF and Natural Colour designations are essential technical selling points for this high-end segment. Non-Chill Filtration actively ensures the retention of natural fatty acids and esters, which contribute significantly to the whisky’s desired mouthfeel and complexity. The expression is fully compliant with SWR as a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Liquid Profile (from verifiable notes)

The profile is complex, warm, and highly expressive, a result of the NCF status and higher bottling strength.

Nose: The aroma features notes of caramelised citrus fruits, light vanilla, and cinnamon.7 Further complexity includes notes of toasted barley, hazelnuts, and sweet raisins.

Palate: Exhibits warming notes of ginger, nutmeg, and spiced apple crumble, complemented by orange zest. The dual-oak maturation contributes layers of soft wood spices and vanilla.

Finish: The conclusion is long and creamy, with persistent notes of toasted oak and wood spices.

With water: Producer notes are unavailable. However, the bottling strength of 46.2% ABV allows for a measure of dilution without compromising the liquid integrity, likely revealing additional flavour layers without diminishing the texture.

Pricing & Market Dynamics (GBP)

The original RRP for the 2025 release is set at GBP 77.00, establishing a firm premium price point for a 12 Year Old single malt. A comparison with secondary market performance demonstrates a critical valuation mechanism. Older, pre-revamp 12 Year Old bottlings from the 1980s, which were bottled at a lower 40% ABV and were not NCF, have achieved hammer prices of GBP 225.00 at auction. This confirms that in the auction sphere, historical rarity presently holds greater monetary value than the modern liquid’s technical quality. The retail price of GBP 77.00 for the technically superior, modern NCF version must be justified by leveraging Glenturret's deep-rooted history while assuring the buyer of the commitment to modern quality standards. Liquidity is strong for the current batch but is inherently controlled and constrained by the annual, finite release model.

UK Retailer Current 70cl, 46.4% (2024 Release) 185.00 Reported retail listing (Indicative of premium pricing potential/early batch value)

Distillery/Bottler Snapshot

Operating under a luxury mandate, The Glenturret focuses exclusively on high-specification, NCF, and naturally coloured annual releases. This disciplined model ensures high liquid quality and a sustained premium market position. It requires proactive inventory management to meticulously track slight yearly ABV and cask variations. The distillery represents a key target for sophisticated buyers seeking both historical provenance and contemporary craft excellence.

Sourcing

Target formats/eras: The optimal strategy involves securing consistent allocations of the latest annual release (e.g., 2025) while maintaining precise inventory segregation for recent past vintages (e.g., 2024).

Red flags to avoid: It is crucial not to confuse or misprice the modern, premium NCF releases with older, 40% ABV stock lacking the current NCF/Natural Colour specifications.

Margin/velocity expectations: The controlled RRP supports robust margins. Velocity is moderated by the premium price point but is consistently reinforced by significant enthusiast demand for technically superior, age-stated Scotch.
