About this whisky
- Malt type: Single Malt
- Region: Scotland
Mackinlay's Shackleton "The Discovery Edition" is a meticulous recreation of the historic spirit left behind by Sir Ernest Shackleton during his 1907 Antarctic expedition. After three crates of the original 19th-century whisky were discovered frozen in the permafrost beneath Shackleton’s base camp in 2007, Whyte & Mackay’s Master Blender, Richard Paterson, performed a detailed chemical and sensory analysis to replicate its exact profile. This 2011 limited release of 50,000 bottles features a sophisticated blend of Speyside, Island, and Highland malts—including rare 1983 Glen Mhor—bottled at the original strength of 47.3% ABV. The result is an elegant, lightly peated whisky with a straw-gold hue, offering a refined bouquet of crushed apple, pear, and fresh pineapple, followed by a palate of buttery vanilla, oak shavings, and a gentle hint of bonfire smoke.
