Introduced in 1879 by the Graham brothers, who were initially tea merchants, Black Bottle quickly gained a reputation for its unique character. The whisky was originally presented in black glass sourced from Germany. However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 forced a switch to green glass.
Black Bottle was a well-kept secret in north-east Scotland for many years but began to attract a broader audience. In 1959, the Graham family sold the business to Schenley Industries Inc. of the USA. Over time, Black Bottle's distinct character faded, losing the full-bodied, smoky profile that it once had due to the use of Aberdeenshire malts.
From 1990, under Allied Distillers Ltd., efforts were made to restore Black Bottle’s quality. In 1995, Highland Distilleries Ltd. acquired Black Bottle and refocused the blend to include malts from all of Islay’s working distilleries, branding it as "Finest Scotch Whisky with a Heart of Islay." This blend emphasized phenolic Islay character, particularly from Laphroaig and Ardbeg, with Bunnahabhain as the core malt.
In 1999, Highland Distilleries became part of The Edrington Group. Four years later, Bunnahabhain distillery and the Black Bottle brand were sold to Burn Stewart Distillers, who maintained the Islay-centric blend until 2013. Master Blender Ian MacMillan then sought to return Black Bottle to its north-east Scottish roots, balancing the smokiness with richness, and reintroducing a black glass bottle based on a 1906 design.
Today, Black Bottle is produced by Distell Group Limited, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V. It remains a blend that honors its origins while appealing to modern whisky enthusiasts.
Black Bottle is available in several variations. The standard non-vintage expression contains whiskies thought to be at least 7 years old. Previously, more mature expressions, such as 10 and 15-year-olds, were available but have been discontinued. In early 2020, a limited re-release of the 10-year-old expression was introduced in select markets.
The whisky is available in different bottle sizes (70cl or 75cl) and at varying strengths (40% or 43% ABV) depending on the target market, whether European or American.
