Clynelish Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Clynelish Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Brora, Sutherland, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1967 and is currently owned by Diageo. Clynelish is best known for the distinctive waxy, honeyed character of its spirit, a signature style prized by blenders and single malt fans alike.

History

Clynelish traces its roots to an earlier distillery of the same name, built in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford (later Duke of Sutherland) to make use of barley grown on the Sutherland estate and to supply legal whisky in an area rife with illicit stills. In 1967, Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd built a new, larger distillery directly across the road from the original, equipping it with six stills modelled closely on the old ones so the new spirit would carry a similar character.

The old distillery continued operating alongside its replacement for a couple of years before closing, then reopened in 1969 under the name Brora, producing a heavily peated style largely for blending. Brora finally closed in 1983, its buildings left largely intact, while the 1967 Clynelish distillery continued production and evolved into the well-regarded, lightly waxy Highland malt known today. Ownership passed to United Distillers in 1987 and then to Diageo on its formation in 1998. Diageo added washbacks in 2008 to enable seven-day production and, in 2014, announced a major expansion doubling capacity with a new mashtun, additional washbacks and six extra stills. The historic Brora site was fully restored and reopened by Diageo in 2021 as a working distillery in its own right, once again distilling alongside its modern neighbour.

Most of Clynelish's output goes into blended Scotch, particularly Johnnie Walker, for which it is considered a key component of the Gold Label Reserve, though it has also built a strong reputation as a single malt in its own right.
