Convalmore Distillery is an inactive Scotch single malt whisky distillery located in Dufftown, Moray, Scotland. Established in 1893/1894, the distillery has a rich history marked by innovation, expansion, and changes in ownership, but it ceased operations in 1985.
History
The Convalmore Distillery was founded by the Convalmore-Glenlivet Distillers Co. Ltd. in 1893/1894. Over the years, the distillery changed hands several times. In 1904, it was sold to W&P Lowrie & Co. Ltd., and by 1906, it was acquired by James Buchanan. The distillery later became part of The Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL) in 1925, and subsequently, Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) in 1930.
Key Events
1909: A significant fire damaged the distillery, leading to extensive renovations.
1910-1916: Convalmore experimented with continuous distillation of malt spirit, a pioneering effort in whisky production.
1962: The coal-firing of the pot stills was replaced with indirect steam-heating, modernizing the distillation process.
1964-1965: The distillery underwent further modernization and expansion, increasing its capacity from two to four pot stills.
Ownership and Legacy
In 1992, the site was acquired by William Grant & Sons to augment their warehouse capacity. Despite the distillery being dismantled and inactive, the market rights to the Convalmore name and bottling remain with Diageo. The Convalmore distillery site is now part of the greater Glenfiddich and Balvenie distillery complex.
Releases and Products
Convalmore has seen only a few official releases, making its whisky highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. The distillery is also recognized by its Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) code 83. Official releases include rare expressions that highlight the distinct character of Convalmore’s single malt.
Geographical Significance
The name "Convalmore" is derived from the nearby Conval hills, located just north of Dufftown, adding a regional identity to the distillery's heritage.
Current Status
Although the Convalmore Distillery itself is inactive and dismantled, its legacy continues through the limited releases and the historical significance it holds in the Scotch whisky industry. The warehouses at the original site still serve the needs of William Grant & Sons, contributing to the operations of the neighboring Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries.
