Oban Distillery is a historic whisky distillery located in the west coast port of Oban, Scotland. Established in 1794, it predates the town that developed around it. The distillery is owned by Diageo and is known for producing a "West Highland" style whisky that blends the dry, smoky characteristics of the Scottish islands with the lighter, sweeter malts of the Highlands. With only two pot stills, Oban Distillery is one of the smallest in Scotland, yet it maintains a significant reputation for quality and tradition.
History
The distillery was founded by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson in 1794. Initially operating as the Oban Brewing Company, they began distilling whisky a year later. The business stayed within the Stevenson family for three generations until it was sold to local merchant Peter Curnstie in 1830. In 1883, Walter Higgin acquired the distillery and undertook significant rebuilding efforts. The distillery changed hands again in 1898 when Alexander Edward, owner of Aultmore Distillery, bought it. That same year, the distillery suffered losses due to the collapse of Pattison's of Leith, a major blending company.
In 1923, Oban was sold to Dewars and subsequently became part of the Distillers Company in 1925. The distillery experienced periods of inactivity, from 1931 to 1937 and from 1969 to 1972, the latter of which saw the construction of a new still house. In 1989, Oban Distillery introduced a visitors' center and launched the Oban 14 Year Old as part of Diageo's "Classic Malts Selection."
