Strathmill Distillery is one of three distilleries located in the town of Keith, situated in the heart of Scotland's "Malt Whisky Country" in Moray. Unlike the other two distilleries in Keith, Strathisla and Glen Keith, which are owned by Chivas (part of the Pernod Ricard group), Strathmill has been owned by Diageo since 1997. The distillery primarily produces malt for the J&B blended whisky brand.
The site originally housed a corn mill, known as Strathisla Mills, established by A.G. Johnstone in 1823. During the whisky boom between 1890 and 1899, the mill was converted into a distillery in 1891, repurposing some of the existing buildings. This period saw the construction of around thirty distilleries in the area due to high demand.
In 1895, gin producers W. & A. Gilbey purchased the distillery, changing its name from Glenisla-Glenlivet to Strathmill. The name "Strathmill" combines "Strath," the Gaelic word for "shallow valley," and "mill," reflecting the site's original function as a corn mill.
Diageo acquired Strathmill in 1997, and it has since been used to produce malt whisky for the J&B blended whisky.
Strathmill Distillery's production equipment includes two wash stills and two spirit stills. The distillery also has seven on-site warehouses: five traditional dunnage warehouses and two racked warehouses. It has a production capacity of 1,800,000 litres of pure alcohol per year. The majority of the malt produced at Strathmill is used for J&B blended whisky.
