Wolfburn is the northernmost Whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland and derives its name from the burn (stream) from which it takes its waters named Wolf. Originally the distillery opening was in 1821 just 350 meters from its current location and by the 1870’s it was marked in an ordinance survey map as a ruin. In 2012 approval was gained to build the new Wolfburn distillery which is the one producing at present.

Historical Context

Wolfburn Distillery, located in Thurso, Highlands, re-established production in 2013, making it one of Scotland's newest operational distilleries. Cask #807, distilled in 2014, represents an ultra-early expression, offering direct insight into the foundational character of the new make spirit and the distillery’s initial maturation strategy. This early access to the spirit's DNA makes it historically significant.

The scarcity of this expression is defined by two factors: its single-cask nature and its curator. This was a private, single-cask bottling meticulously selected and championed by the esteemed Dornoch Castle Whisky Bar. This high-authority endorsement elevates its status far beyond a typical independent bottling. The total outturn was exceptionally low, limited to just 195 bottles.

The four-year maturation period (20142018) is notably short for Scotch whisky. The success and subsequent high market valuation of this bottling depends entirely on the robust quality of the new make spirit and the high level of activity within Cask #807.

Technical Specification & Variant Map

The spirit was bottled at Cask Strength. The outturn of 195 bottles from a single cask is the primary technical driver of its extreme rarity. The tasting notes often highlight youthful intensity—spicy, malty, and evolving characteristics.

Packaging & authenticity checklist

Authentication requires confirming the specific Cask #807, the 2014 vintage, and the curatorial provenance linked to Dornoch Castle. The total outturn of 195 bottles is a key verification point. The bottle’s value is highly sensitive to the integrity of the seal and external packaging.

Regulatory/terminology notes

The Cask Strength designation ensures the liquid is presented in its most potent, unadulterated form. The success of this bottling challenges traditional investment metrics where age is primary.

Pricing stratification: Value is driven by provenance, exceptional cask selection, and specific curatorial endorsement (Dornoch Castle).

Distillery/Bottler Snapshot
