8 Doors Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in John o' Groats, Caithness, in the Scottish Highlands. It was founded in 2020 and opened to the public in September 2022, and is currently owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Kerry and Derek Campbell. It holds the distinction of being the most northerly whisky distillery on the UK mainland.
8 Doors Distillery was established by Kerry and Derek Campbell, lifelong residents of the John o' Groats area, who spent several years planning the project before opening its doors in September 2022. Production is overseen by Master Distiller John Ramsay, who brings more than 40 years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, with the distillery placing particular emphasis on cask maturation alongside distillation.
The distillery's name and branding draw on local legend: Jan de Groot, a Dutch ferryman who settled in the area in the 15th century and gave John o' Groats its name, is said to have built an octagonal house with eight doors and eight windows so that his seven sons could each enter and be seated at the head of the table without dispute. This story of Jan de Groot's "Seven Sons" also lends its name to the distillery's initial release range, issued as independently sourced and blended whiskies while its own new-make spirit matures. There was historical precedent for whisky-making in the immediate area: a licensed distillery operated at John o' Groats between 1826 and 1838, using local bere barley and hand-cut peat.
As its own single malt matures, 8 Doors has released whiskies under its Seven Sons label, including the Seven Sons 10 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky and the Seven Sons 34 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky, alongside the Five Ways Blended Whisky Liqueur (flavoured with orange, ginger, honey and spice) and limited editions such as a 28 Year Old Spirit of Brazil Highland Single Malt. The distillery's own 8 Doors Single Malt Scotch Whisky is in maturation for future release.
