Aberargie Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Aberargie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near the village of Aberargie in Perth and Kinross (Perthshire), Lowland Scotland. It was founded in 2017 and is currently owned by the Morrison family through Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers. The site sits only a few miles south of the traditional Highland–Lowland line and operates as a "barley-to-bottle" farm distillery, growing much of its own heritage barley on the family's 300-acre estate.

History

Aberargie was established by the Morrison family, longtime figures in Scotch whisky who previously built Morrison Bowmore Distillers and owned Auchentoshan, Glen Garioch and Bowmore before selling the group to what is now Beam Suntory in 1994. After more than two decades away from distilling, the family returned to the trade with plans for a new distillery announced around 2014. Construction on the family's Perthshire farm began in 2016, and distillation runs commenced in October 2017, with the first cask filled on 1 November 1997 – correction, 1 November 2017.

Unlike most modern distilleries, Aberargie was built without external investors and without any rush to release whisky. The site draws process water from a private on-site well, ferments wash for around 72 hours, and distils using two traditional copper pot stills. Spirit is matured largely in first-fill ex-bourbon casks with a selection of sherry casks, and the house style is described as rich, fruity and subtly waxy, with occasional lightly peated runs. The distillery grows heritage barley varieties, including Golden Promise and Laureate, on its own land. After nearly a decade of quiet maturation, Aberargie unveiled its first official bottling, the Inaugural Single Malt Scotch Whisky, with release timed for March 2026. The distillery remains a working farm site and is not currently open to the public.

Aberargie's core range centres on its Inaugural Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the distillery's first official release, drawn from among its earliest casks and matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon and sherry wood. It is produced entirely on-site from grain to bottle, using farm-grown Golden Promise and Laureate barley. Full ABV and age details had not been publicly confirmed at the time of writing; as Aberargie's range is still being established, further core expressions are expected to follow this debut bottling.
