Arbikie Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Arbikie Distillery is a Scotch whisky, rye whisky, gin and vodka distillery located on the Arbikie Highland Estate near Inverkeilor, Angus, on Scotland's Highland east coast. It was founded in 2013 and is currently owned by the Stirling family, who have farmed the estate for four generations. Arbikie is best known for its "field to bottle" ethos, growing around 90% of its own raw materials on the surrounding farm and for reviving commercial rye whisky production in Scotland for the first time in over a century.

History

The Stirling family has farmed at Arbikie, on Lunan Bay on Angus's east coast, since the 1920s, with the family's farming roots tracing back to the 1660s. In 2013, brothers John, Iain and David Stirling converted a former cattle shed on the estate into a distillery, an idea reportedly sparked during a night out in New York. There are documented references to whisky-making on the estate dating back to 1794, a date the distillery later used to name one of its releases. Arbikie's first spirit off the still was a potato vodka made from Maris Piper and King Edwards potatoes grown on the farm, launched in 2014, followed by Kirsty's Gin in 2015, named after founding master distiller Kirsty Black. In 2020 Arbikie released its Highland Rye whisky, the first commercially produced rye whisky in Scotland in more than 100 years. The distillery has continued to lay down single malt spirit for long-term maturation, and in 2021 secured £3 million in UK government funding to develop a hydrogen-fuelled distilling plant. A new visitor experience centre opened on the estate in May 2022, and Arbikie achieved B Corp certification in 2025.
