Ardlussa Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery that stood on Glebe Street in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1879 and was closed in 1923, when its parent company entered voluntary liquidation; the buildings were demolished in 1927. Ardlussa holds the distinction of being the last distillery ever built in Campbeltown, constructed at the peak of the town's Victorian whisky boom.
Ardlussa Distillery was built in 1879 by the Ardlussa Distillery Company on the western side of Glebe Street, standing beside the earlier Glen Nevis Distillery (1877) and facing the rear of Springbank Distillery. The whisky writer Alfred Barnard visited during his 1880s tour of the United Kingdom's distilleries and recorded Ardlussa's 1885 output at around 118,000 gallons, describing an oblong, three-storey building stretching some 256 feet along Glebe Street — evidence of the scale Campbeltown's distilling trade had reached at the time.
In 1919, as part of an industry-wide rationalisation that brought several Campbeltown distilleries under common ownership, Ardlussa was acquired by West Highland Malt Distilleries Limited. The consolidation did not save the business: like many Campbeltown distilleries of the era, Ardlussa fell victim to the collapse of the whisky trade after the First World War, falling demand, and the loss of the American market during Prohibition. Production ceased in 1923 when the parent company was placed into voluntary liquidation, and the distillery never reopened.
Ardlussa Distillery closed for good in 1923 amid the broader collapse of Campbeltown's whisky industry, which saw the town shrink from around thirty working distilleries at its Victorian peak to a mere handful by the mid-20th century. The site was demolished in 1927, and no buildings survive today. Genuine Ardlussa single malt bottlings are exceptionally rare, effectively confined to old blended-whisky stocks and specialist auction listings, making the distillery a footnote of interest mainly to whisky historians and collectors of Campbeltown's "lost distilleries."
