Ardnahoe Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery situated on the northeastern coast of Islay, an island renowned for its whisky production in Scotland.
Location
Ardnahoe Distillery is strategically located just north of Port Askaig, nestled between the renowned Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain distilleries. It occupies a picturesque site between Loch Ardnahoe and the Sound of Islay (Caol Ìle), named after the Gaelic translation meaning "Height of the Hollow."
History
Plans for Ardnahoe Distillery were first submitted to Argyll and Bute Council in January 2016, marking the beginning of its development phase. Construction commenced swiftly, and by October 2017, the distillery's foundations were laid. In April 2019, Ardnahoe proudly opened its doors as the first new whisky distillery on Islay in 15 years. The inaugural ceremony was officiated by Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, signifying a significant milestone for the island's whisky industry.
Ardnahoe Distillery was established with a substantial £12 million investment from Hunter Laing & Company, a respected Scottish family-owned whisky business. Spanning four acres (1.5 hectares), the distillery is overseen by Stewart Hunter Laing, alongside his sons Scott and Andrew.
Within its first year of operation, Ardnahoe Distillery welcomed 24,000 visitors and earned a prestigious five-star grading from VisitScotland, attesting to its appeal as a premier whisky destination.
Facilities
The distillery boasts a modern visitor centre equipped with retail facilities, a whisky bar, and a restaurant, offering guests a comprehensive whisky experience amid stunning Islay landscapes.
Production
Ardnahoe Distillery employs traditional worm tubs in its distillation process, a distinctive feature uncommon among Islay whiskies. This method contributes to the unique character and flavor profile of Ardnahoe's single malt Scotch whisky.
