Ben Wyvis Distillery was a Scotch single malt whisky distillery that once stood within the Invergordon grain distillery complex near Invergordon, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1965 by Invergordon Distillers and closed in 1977, having been built primarily to supply malt whisky for the company's blends. Although it operated for barely a decade, Ben Wyvis is notable for its unusual small stills and for the rarity that has made surviving bottlings prized among collectors today.
Ben Wyvis takes its name from the prominent Highland peak overlooking the Cromarty Firth, and the name had in fact been used once before. An earlier Ben Wyvis distillery operated near Dingwall from 1879, founded by D. G. Ross and later sold to the Ferintosh Distillery Co.; it was renamed Ferintosh and closed in 1926, and its former site is now occupied by residential housing. The distillery most often meant by "Ben Wyvis" today is the second of that name, built in 1965 by Invergordon Distillers on the grounds of their large grain distillery at Invergordon. Fitted with a single wash still and a single spirit still, it was constructed chiefly to produce malt whisky for use in Invergordon's blended Scotch, though limited quantities of single malt were also filled into cask. Production continued for a little over a decade before the distillery was closed and dismantled in 1977.
Ben Wyvis was closed and demolished in 1977, and no trace of the distillery buildings remains on the Invergordon site today. Its stills were not scrapped, however; they were preserved and later installed at the revived Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown, where they remain in use. Because Ben Wyvis produced single malt for only around a decade and released almost nothing under its own name at the time, original fillings are extremely scarce. Official and independent bottlings that have surfaced in later years are considered significant finds and command strong interest at whisky auctions, making Ben Wyvis one of the more sought-after names among Scotland's lost distilleries.
