Benmore Distillery is a closed Scotch whisky distillery that stood on Saddell Street in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was founded in 1868 and was closed in the late 1920s amid the collapse of Campbeltown's once-dominant whisky industry, before passing into the hands of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). Unusually for Campbeltown, Benmore was built not by local investors but by the Glasgow whisky blending and broking firm Bulloch, Lade & Co.
Benmore Distillery was constructed in 1868 by Bulloch, Lade & Co., a prominent Glasgow-based whisky blending house, making it one of the few Campbeltown distilleries founded by outside capital rather than by the town's own merchants and shipowners. The business was formally incorporated as a limited company in 1896. At its peak the distillery was reported to produce around 125,000 gallons of spirit a year, a substantial output for the period and reflective of Campbeltown's status as the "Whisky Capital of the World" in the late nineteenth century.
In 1920 Benmore was sold into a new holding company, Benmore Distilleries Limited, registered in England, which simultaneously acquired the neighbouring Lochhead distillery in Campbeltown, Lochindaal on Islay, and Dallas Dhu in Speyside. This consolidation came just as Campbeltown's whisky trade entered a steep decline, driven by a combination of Prohibition-era loss of the lucrative American export market, poor-quality "rushed" whisky produced by some distillers during the boom years, and general overproduction. Benmore's own production is generally recorded as having ceased around 1927–1928, though some accounts describe activity at the site continuing in a reduced capacity into the mid-1930s. In 1929 the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) — a forerunner of today's Diageo — acquired the entire share capital of Benmore Distilleries Limited, absorbing Benmore along with its sister sites.
Benmore fell victim to the same forces that shut down most of Campbeltown's distilleries in the 1920s: collapsing demand, reputational damage from poor wartime-era whisky, and the loss of American markets during Prohibition. Distilling ended in the late 1920s, and by the mid-1930s the buildings had been sold on to West Coast Motors, the bus operator that came to use the site, with the distillery premises remaining physically intact for decades afterwards even though production never resumed. No new-make spirit has been produced at Benmore since its closure, so any surviving bottlings under the Benmore name — chiefly old blended-whisky components or rare independent bottlings from the early twentieth century — are historic curiosities sought after by collectors of Campbeltown whisky history rather than a living single malt range.
