About
Benrinnes Distillery

Benrinnes Distillery is a malt whisky distillery that produces legendary whisky sited close to Sheandow and Aberlour in the Speyside region in Scotland. The distillery was constructed in 1826 by Peter Mackenzie. Three years after its establishment, a flood destroyed the distillery and was later reconstructed by John Innes in 1835. This new edifice was officially founded under the new name Lyne of Ruthrie. When the distillery went bankrupt, the ownership was transferred to William Smith, who renamed the distillery Benrinnes.

In 1986 once again, the distillery was completely destroyed only this time by fire. It was reconstructed and refurbished by the John Dewar & Sons company.

In 1966, Benrinnes increased their number of stills from three to six, this in turn significantly expanded the production volume of the distillery. In 1970 Benrinnes also swapped from mechanical stoking to internal heating. So, by this time most of the original characteristics had been altered.

The Benrinnes distillery was once a farming distillery. But in 1955 the malting floors were substituted by a Saladin Box. It was also the time when farming stopped in Benrinnes. Later in 1984, the Saladin box was also shut off and malt was purchased from the United Distillers maltings instead.

One of the most special features often ascribed to Benrinnes is their use of triple distillation -- something unusual in the Highlands, nevertheless, It’s a matter of policy in Irish and Lowland Scotch Whisky. But that practice is old news, having been ceased at Benrinnes in 2007

Another uncommon trait of Benrinnes is that it is among the few distilleries in Scotland that make use of ‘worm tubs' to simmer down the vapours and compressed spirit from the running pot stills. The rest of their practice generally conforms to the conventional Speyside forms and practices.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the semi-official 'Flora & Fauna' expression (first released in 1991) was the only extensively available bottling of Benrinnes. The only other semi-official version was a 21yo United Distillers Rare Malts (UDRM) bottling distilled in 1974.

A 21-year-old official bottling of the distillery was launched as a ‘Limited Release’ in 2014. Observing these dates, the whisky from these casks can be traced to the time of ‘United Distillers’ and IDV - before these two large whisky corporations amalgamated into the giant Diageo in 1998.

In 2016, Boutique-y Whisky company released the 18yo independent bottling of Benrinnes. Also In the same year, a 19yo 1977/2016 was released.

In 2007 the triple distillation process was closed and all the small stills were used as spirit stills. Up till today, Diageo remains the owner of the Benrinnes distillery and produces mostly for the blending industry.
