Benromach Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on Invererne Road near Forres, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1898 and is currently owned by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, who rescued and restored it after a long period of closure. Benromach is one of Speyside's smallest working distilleries and is known for deliberately reviving pre-1960s production methods, including worm tub condensers and a lightly peated house style, at a time when most of the region moved toward lighter, unpeated whisky.
Benromach was built in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F. W. Brickman during the last great Victorian whisky boom, with distilling beginning around 1900. The venture was almost immediately hit by the industry-wide crash of the early 1900s and closed within a few years for lack of funds. Over the following decades ownership passed through several hands, including Harvey McNair & Co., Benromach Distillery Ltd, and Associated Scottish Distilleries (later part of Scottish Malt Distillers/DCL), with the distillery repeatedly mothballed and reopened as market conditions shifted. Floor maltings on site were discontinued in the 1960s. Benromach fell silent again in 1983 during the wider Speyside downturn of that decade and remained closed for a decade.
In 1993 the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, long established in nearby Elgin, purchased the site, and from 1997 undertook a sympathetic restoration that deliberately retained small, traditional equipment rather than installing large-scale modern plant. The rebuilt distillery was officially reopened by HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) in 1998, and the first new-make spirit was laid down that year. Because of the ageing required for single malt, the first Benromach bottlings under the revived distillery did not appear until 2004. Since then, Gordon & MacPhail has run Benromach as a deliberately old-fashioned, hands-on operation, and in 2019 added an on-site Red Door Gin distillery to the visitor experience.
Benromach's core range centres on its lightly peated, sherry- and bourbon-cask house style. Key expressions include Benromach 10 Years Old (43% ABV), the entry-level Benromach 5 Years Old (40% ABV), Benromach 15 Years Old (43% ABV), and the smokier Benromach Peat Smoke (46% ABV). The "Contrasts" series adds variations such as Benromach Organic (46% ABV, un-chill-filtered and free of added colouring), alongside older vintage-dated Origins bottlings and rare aged releases up to 21 years and beyond.
