Birr Distillery — County Offaly Single Malt Whisky

Birr Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery that was located in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. It was founded in 1805 and closed in 1889 after a catastrophic fire, and the site was later converted into a private residence. Birr was one of the last two surviving distilleries in a county that had once been home to five, giving it an outsized role in the story of Irish whiskey's 19th-century decline.

History

Birr Distillery was established in 1805 on Newbridge Street beside the River Camcor. County Offaly (then King's County) had originally supported five whiskey distilleries, but by 1818 only two remained, both in the town of Birr. In the late 1840s one of these two closed, and the surviving operation was purchased by brothers R. & J. Wallace, who ran it successfully for decades under the name Wallace Brothers.

Under the Wallace family, the distillery grew into a substantial three-storey, quadrangular complex with its own malting floor, kiln and mill, mash tun, still room, spirit store and bonded warehouse. At its peak it produced around 200,000 US gallons (roughly 760,000 litres) of spirit a year, making it a significant employer and producer in the midlands of Ireland during the Victorian era.

Closure & Legacy

Birr Distillery closed in 1889 after a devastating fire. According to local accounts, a worker fell asleep near the millstone, whose friction ignited the surrounding grain dust and materials; the fire spread so fiercely that burning whiskey reportedly flowed in a flaming mass down the Camcor River. The distillery never reopened. In the 1990s an English family bought the ruined property and converted the main building into a summer residence, while adjoining structures were redeveloped as apartments. No original Birr-distilled whiskey is known to survive on the collectors' market; the distillery is remembered today chiefly as a case study in the fire risk that claimed many 19th-century Irish distilleries, and as a physical landmark in Birr's local history.
