Bon Accord Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located at Hardgate in Aberdeen, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1855 by the Bon Accord Distillery Company and closed in the early 1910s, after which the buildings were demolished. Alfred Barnard visited the distillery during his 1880s tour of the United Kingdom, later describing it in his 1887 book The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom as one of the country's larger pot-still malt whisky producers.
Bon Accord Distillery was established in 1855 on Hardgate, on ground that had previously been occupied by a brewery dating back to 1785. Under the Bon Accord Distillery Company, it grew into one of Aberdeen's principal whisky producers of the Victorian era. By the time Alfred Barnard toured Scotland's distilleries in the 1880s, Bon Accord was noted as one of the largest pot-still malt whisky producers in the country. Some distillery records indicate the business was reorganised and renamed the North of Scotland Distillery around 1896, reflecting a change in ownership and production focus. The distillery traded under several brand names during its operating life, including "Cock O' the North."
Bon Accord Distillery closed in the early 1910s (sources cite 1913 or 1914), a period when falling demand and industry consolidation forced a number of smaller independent Scotch whisky distilleries out of business ahead of the First World War. The distillery buildings were subsequently demolished, and the Aberdeen site they once occupied is now residential, with no trace of the original works remaining. No bottlings are known to survive under the Bon Accord name itself, making it one of Scotland's more obscure "ghost" distilleries. Its most visible legacy today is the "Cock O' the North" brand name once used by Bon Accord, which was revived in recent years as a whisky liqueur made using malt whisky from the modern Speyside Distillery, itself built by the Christie family.
