Borders (Hawick) Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

The Borders Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, Lowland Scotland. It was founded in 2018 and is currently owned and operated by the Three Stills Company. It holds the distinction of being the first whisky distillery to open in the Scottish Borders region since 1837.

History

The Borders Distillery was established by four local businessmen, George Tait, Tony Roberts, Tim Carton and John Fordyce, trading as the Three Stills Company. The site occupies a landmark late-Victorian building on Commercial Road in Hawick, originally built in the 1880s to house the Hawick Electric Company and later used by local engineering firms, which the founders converted into a working distillery with a modern glass extension linking two historic sheds. Distillation began in March 2018, and the distillery opened to the public on 1 May 2018, ending an almost 200-year gap since whisky was last legally produced in the Borders. The distillery uses barley grown within roughly 35 miles of Hawick and draws its process water from the River Teviot. Alongside single malt whisky, the site also produces William Kerr's Borders Gin and a malted-barley vodka, using a specially commissioned Carter Head still built by Forsyths of Rothes. Its first Workshop Series single malt release, WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye, appeared in 2022, and the distillery has also built a following through its blended Clan Fraser and Lower East Side ranges while its own malt matures.
