BrewDog / LoneWolf Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

BrewDog / LoneWolf Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 2016 as the Lone Wolf Distillery, the distilling arm of the craft brewer BrewDog, and closed in January 2026 when BrewDog ceased all spirits production. Best known for LoneWolf Gin and other spirits, the site also housed a nascent single malt whisky project that was shelved when the distilling business was wound down before any bottling reached the market.

History

BrewDog, the Aberdeenshire craft brewer founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie, opened a purpose-built distillery at its Ellon headquarters (Balmacassie Commercial Park/Industrial Estate) in 2015-2016 under the name Lone Wolf Distillery. The distillery launched LoneWolf Gin in 2016 and went on to add further gin variants, ABSTRAKT Vodka, 500 Cuts and Duo rums, and Casa Rayos Tequila, using copper pot stills alongside a tall rectification column still for base-spirit production. In 2019 the operation was renamed BrewDog Distilling Co, and equipment was later expanded to include dedicated wash and spirit stills capable of malt whisky production. From December 2022, BrewDog began auctioning early casks of single malt and single grain new-make spirit, signalling ambitions to eventually release a BrewDog/LoneWolf single malt whisky, provisionally expected around 2026.

Quick Facts

  • Region: Highland
  • Founded: 2016 (as Lone Wolf Distillery; renamed BrewDog Distilling Co in 2019)
  • Owner: BrewDog plc
  • Status: Closed
  • Stills: Copper pot wash and spirit stills, plus a rectification column still for base spirit

Closure & Legacy

Following the departures of BrewDog co-founder Martin Dickie in August 2025 and distilling managing director Steven Kersley in October 2025, BrewDog announced in January 2026 that it would cease production of all its distilling brands - including LoneWolf Gin, ABSTRAKT Vodka, Casa Rayos Tequila and Ron Bodega - to refocus the company on beer and its Wonderland ready-to-drink range. The planned single malt whisky, which had not yet been released, was cancelled as a result, meaning no official BrewDog/LoneWolf single malt ever reached shelves. Existing gin, vodka and rum stock was run off and outstanding supply commitments honoured during a wind-down period. Because no whisky was ever bottled and released commercially before closure, there are no collectible BrewDog/LoneWolf single malt releases on the market; any interest from collectors is likely to centre on early cask samples or the brand's gin and rum output rather than whisky.
