Brora Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Brora Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on the northern outskirts of Brora, Sutherland, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1819 and is currently owned by Diageo. Once one of Scotland's most celebrated "ghost distilleries," Brora produced no new spirit for 38 years before being fully restored and reopened in 2021.

History

Brora Distillery was built in 1819 by George Granville Leveson-Gower, the Marquess of Stafford (later 1st Duke of Sutherland), to supply legal whisky to tenants displaced by the Highland Clearances and to make use of surplus barley from his estate. For its first 150 years it operated under the name Clynelish. In 1846 the distillery passed to George Lawson and his sons, who ran it until selling to Glasgow blender James Ainslie and his partner John Risk in 1896. The Distillers Company Limited (DCL), the forerunner of Diageo, took a stake in 1912 and gained full control by 1925.

In 1968 a new, larger Clynelish distillery was built alongside the original site, and the older distillery was renamed Brora to avoid confusion. Between 1969 and 1973 Brora produced an unusually heavily peated style of whisky to make up for a shortage of Islay malt caused by drought, a period now prized by collectors. From 1973 it largely reverted to a lighter, waxy Highland style before DCL closed it in 1983 amid a wider industry downturn, alongside sister "ghost" distilleries such as Port Ellen. Brora's stocks of rare, heavily sherried and peated single malt from the closure era went on to become some of the most sought-after and expensive whiskies ever bottled by Diageo's Special Releases and Rare & Exceptional programmes.

After a three-year, multimillion-pound restoration that preserved the original stills, mash tun and much of the site's historic character, Diageo reopened Brora on 19 May 2021, alongside the parallel revival of Port Ellen. The distillery is now producing new-make spirit again while continuing to release aged stock from its silent decades.

Core Range

Brora does not release a conventional, widely stocked core range in the way most working distilleries do; instead it is best known for ultra-rare, limited annual bottlings drawn from stock laid down before its 1983 closure and, increasingly, from spirit made since the 2021 restart. The flagship modern releases form the "Brora Triptych," comprising Elusive Legacy (48 years old, the oldest single malt Brora has released), Age of Peat (43 years old, in the heavily smoky style distilled in the early 1970s) and Timeless Original (38 years old, from casks filled in 1982). Diageo also issues Brora expressions periodically through its annual Special Releases and Rare & Exceptional collections, typically at cask strength and in very limited numbers.
