Caledonian Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Caledonian Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery that once stood in Campbeltown, on Scotland's Kintyre peninsula. It was built in 1823 for Peter Stewart & Co. and closed in 1842, giving it one of the shortest operating lives of any distillery from Campbeltown's 19th-century whisky boom. No bottlings or detailed production records from Caledonian are known to survive, and today it is remembered mainly as one of the many short-lived ventures founded during the town's rapid, and ultimately overextended, expansion as a whisky-producing centre.

History

Caledonian was founded in 1823, during a period of intense growth in Campbeltown's whisky trade. Favourable local barley, abundant peat, easy coastal access for shipping to Glasgow, and strong demand led to a wave of new distillery building in the town through the 1820s. Caledonian was founded alongside near-contemporaries such as Meadowburn (1824), Kinloch (1824), Burnside (1825) and Dalaruan (1825). It was established for Peter Stewart & Co., about whom little further is recorded in surviving whisky histories. Unlike a number of its Campbeltown contemporaries, some of which survived into the early 20th century, Caledonian operated for less than two decades before closing in 1842. Details of its production capacity, site, and any subsequent ownership changes have not survived or have not yet come to light in published sources.

Closure & Legacy

Caledonian closed in 1842, decades before the broader collapse of the Campbeltown whisky industry in the early 20th century, which was driven by the Pattison crash, the loss of the American export market during Prohibition, and the exhaustion of local coal supplies used for distilling. No published whisky reference records the specific reason for Caledonian's early closure or the later fate of its buildings, and it predates the era of branded single malt bottlings by many decades, so no collectible bottlings are known to exist. As with several of Campbeltown's roughly thirty vanished 19th-century distilleries, Caledonian survives today only as an entry in historical registers rather than as a source of whisky sought by collectors.
