Connacht Distillery — County Mayo Single Malt Whisky

Connacht Whiskey Company is an Irish whiskey distillery located at Belleek on the banks of the River Moy in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. It was founded in 2014 and is currently active, operating today under the trading name Ballina Whiskey. It holds the distinction of being the first distillery built in County Mayo in around 150 years, reviving craft whiskey production on Ireland's rugged west coast.

History

The Connacht Whiskey Company was established in 2014, with the distillery itself housed in a converted former bakery building (the old Duffy's Bakery) on the banks of the River Moy, where the river's fresh water meets the incoming tidal waters of the Atlantic. Construction and fit-out of the site took place over the following year, and whiskey production began in 2016, making it the first new distillery in County Mayo in over 150 years. From the outset the distillery positioned itself as a small-batch, craft operation, using 100% Irish malted barley and an unhurried approach to fermentation and distillation to develop a fruit-forward spirit character rooted in its West of Ireland terroir. The site includes on-premises milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation in an on-site barrel room, and bottling, alongside a visitor tour experience. In recent years the business has rebranded its consumer-facing identity to Ballina Whiskey, reflecting its home town, while continuing to operate from the original Connacht Whiskey Company distillery site.
