Craigellachie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in the village of Craigellachie, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1891 and is currently owned by John Dewar & Sons Ltd (part of Bacardi Limited). It is one of only a handful of Scottish distilleries still using worm tub condensers, giving its spirit a distinctively meaty, sulphury character prized by blenders.
Craigellachie Distillery was built in 1891 by the Craigellachie Distillery Company, a venture led by Speyside entrepreneur Alexander Edward in partnership with Sir Peter Mackie of the White Horse blending house. The distillery buildings, including the distinctive pagoda-roofed kiln, were designed by the renowned Speyside distillery architect Charles Doig. Craigellachie survived the industry-wide Pattison Crisis of 1898, which bankrupted many contemporaries. Ownership passed through Peter Mackie's own company from 1916, then to the Distillers Company Limited in 1927 following industry consolidation, and the distillery was substantially rebuilt and modernised in the mid-1960s, when a second pair of stills was installed to double capacity. In 1998, Craigellachie passed to John Dewar & Sons after Bacardi Limited acquired the Dewar's blended whisky business and its distilleries from Diageo. For most of its history the distillery's output went almost exclusively into blended Scotch, particularly Dewar's, with the first official single malt bottling not released until 2004. Today Craigellachie is prized among blenders and single malt enthusiasts alike for the robust, savoury character produced by its traditional worm tub condensers.
Craigellachie's official core range is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and without added colouring. It includes the Craigellachie 13 Year Old (matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks), along with 17, 23 and 31 Year Old expressions, plus occasional cask-finish releases such as a 13 Year Old finished in Bas Armagnac casks.
