Dalintober Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Dalintober Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in the Dalintober area of Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1832 and closed in the mid-1920s as part of the broader collapse of the Campbeltown whisky industry. Dalintober was one of the town's many single malt distilleries that thrived during Campbeltown's Victorian-era boom but did not survive the slump that followed the First World War.

History

Dalintober Distillery was established in 1832 by David Colville and Peter Reid, who traded together as Reid and Colville (also recorded as "Reid & Colvill" or "Reid and Colvilles"). The distillery stood near Queen Street in the Dalintober district of Campbeltown, part of the dense cluster of malt whisky producers that made the town one of Scotland's principal whisky-making centres in the 19th century. Records show the distillery had an annual output of around 120,000 gallons in 1884–85, reflecting the scale Campbeltown production reached at its peak.

The distillery was destroyed by fire on 17 December 1899 and was subsequently rebuilt. It continued under the Reid and Colville partnership until the death of David Colville, by then the sole partner, in 1916. In 1919 the distillery was acquired by West Highland Malt Distilleries Limited, a company formed to consolidate several Campbeltown distilleries under single ownership in response to worsening trading conditions. That consolidation proved short-lived: West Highland Malt Distilleries entered voluntary liquidation in 1923.

Closure & Legacy

Dalintober ceased production in the mid-1920s (sources give 1925 or 1926) as the wider Campbeltown whisky industry collapsed under falling demand, Prohibition-era loss of the key American export market, and a wave of distillery closures and liquidations across the town. The distillery buildings were subsequently demolished; little now survives on the site beyond fragmentary remains such as a low boundary wall, with the former distillery ground now largely given over to housing.

Because Dalintober closed nearly a century ago and its records are sparse, surviving original bottlings are extremely rare and are of interest mainly to specialist collectors and whisky historians rather than being available through normal retail channels. As with other "lost" Campbeltown distilleries of the era, Dalintober is remembered today chiefly as part of the town's whisky heritage rather than as a source of drinkable stock.
