Dean Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that was located in the Dean area of Edinburgh, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1881, converted from the existing Dean Mills complex on the Water of Leith, and closed in 1922. It is one of a number of small Lowland grain and malt distilleries that vanished from Edinburgh in the early twentieth century as the industry consolidated around larger, more efficient plants.
Dean Distillery opened in 1881, established by converting the Dean Mills — one of the historic water-powered mills that lined the Water of Leith in Edinburgh's Dean Village, an area long associated with grain milling and baking rather than whisky production. Documentary detail on the distillery's operators, output, and capacity has not survived in the public record, which is typical of the many small Lowland distilleries that operated for a few decades around the turn of the twentieth century before disappearing largely unrecorded.
Dean Distillery closed in 1922 and the site was subsequently demolished, leaving no standing distillery buildings in Edinburgh's Dean area today. As with many closed Lowland distilleries of this era, no verified original bottlings from Dean are known to circulate on the market, and detailed records of its whisky are scarce. It survives chiefly as a historical footnote in accounts of Edinburgh's nineteenth-century industrial and distilling history.
