Dumbarton Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Dumbarton Distillery is a closed Scotch grain whisky distillery that stood on the banks of the River Leven in Dumbarton, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1938 by Hiram Walker & Sons following their acquisition of George Ballantine & Son, and at its peak was the largest grain whisky distillery in Europe. The complex also housed the smaller Inverleven malt distillery, and its output underpinned the Ballantine's blended Scotch whisky brand for more than six decades before the site was mothballed and eventually demolished.

History

Hiram Walker & Sons, the Canadian distilling group, built the Dumbarton distillery in 1938 on the site of the former Archibald McMillan & Son shipyard on the River Leven, shortly after acquiring George Ballantine & Son Ltd in 1936-37. The new plant was constructed to secure a reliable grain whisky supply for the Ballantine's blend and, at the time, was described as the largest grain distillery in Europe. Alongside it, Hiram Walker also built the small Inverleven malt distillery within the same complex, drawing water from Loch Lomond, so that both malt and grain spirit for Ballantine's could be produced on one site. Ownership later passed to Allied Distillers/Allied Domecq, and then, following Pernod Ricard's acquisition of Allied Domecq in 2005, to Chivas Brothers. Inverleven's malt distilling ceased in 1991, while the much larger grain operation continued into the early 2000s before it too fell silent.

Closure & Legacy

The Dumbarton grain distillery was mothballed in 2002, with production transferred to Chivas Brothers' Strathclyde grain distillery in Glasgow; the adjoining Inverleven malt distillery had already stopped distilling in 1991, and its stills were sold to Bruichladdich in 2005 for use at the revived Port Charlotte distillery on Islay. The redundant red-brick buildings on the Dumbarton site were finally demolished in January and February 2017, and the land was redeveloped mainly for housing, though Ballantine's retained a bonded warehouse complex to the east of the town and a bottling plant to the north. Because Dumbarton grain whisky was used almost exclusively as blending stock rather than bottled as a single grain, official single-distillery releases are rare, and surviving independent bottlings of Dumbarton grain, along with the very limited Inverleven single malt releases, are the main collectible traces of the site today.
