Galloway Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on Wigtown Road near Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was founded in 2017 and is currently owned by actor Sam Heughan and his business partner Alex Norouzi. Originally known as Crafty Distillery and built around an award-winning gin, the site began producing single malt whisky in 2022 and was rebranded as Galloway Distillery following its 2025 acquisition.
The distillery was established in 2017 by Graham Taylor, his father Billy Taylor, and Craig Rankin, who built it using larch wood sourced from nearby Kirkcowan. It launched that same year as a gin and vodka producer, with its flagship Hills & Harbour Gin released in summer 2017, followed by a limited annual Galloway Gin (2018–2024) using foraged local botanicals such as crab apples, chanterelle mushrooms, and elderberry. In 2020, the founders announced an expansion into Scotch whisky production, planning a single malt under the "Billy & Co." name as a tribute to Billy Taylor Sr. The first whisky spirit run took place in 2022, distilled from exclusively Scottish barley with fermentation times of up to 168 hours, and the resulting new-make was laid down to mature in cask on site. In late September 2025, the distillery was acquired by Outlander actor Sam Heughan and business partner Alex Norouzi, co-founders of the Sassenach spirits brand, who renamed it Galloway Distillery. Under the new ownership it has become the production home and visitor showcase for the Sassenach range, with permits filed for expanded malt and grain whisky production alongside the site's continuing gin and vodka output.
Galloway Distillery's whisky laid down since the 2022 first run is still maturing, so its core spirits offering currently centres on The Sassenach Spirit of Home Blended Scotch Whisky, alongside the site's Hills & Harbour and Sassenach gins and vodka. A single malt under the "Billy & Co." name, honouring co-founder Billy Taylor Sr., has been announced as part of the whisky range as stocks mature.
