Girvan Distillery is a Scotch grain whisky distillery located in Girvan, South Ayrshire, in the Lowland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1963 and is currently owned by William Grant & Sons, the family-owned company behind Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. Girvan is one of only a handful of grain distilleries still operating in Scotland and supplies the majority of the spirit used in Grant's blended Scotch whisky, while the wider site also hosts the Ailsa Bay malt distillery and the Hendrick's Gin distillery.
Girvan was built by William Grant & Sons in 1963 after the company lost access to grain whisky supplies from the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), which controlled most of Scotland's grain distilling capacity at the time. Determined not to be dependent on a rival, the Grant family constructed the entire distillery in just nine months, with the first Coffey (column) still commissioned in 1963. The site on the banks of the River Girvan was chosen for its abundant water supply and rail links.
Between 1965 and 1975 the complex also housed Ladyburn, a single malt distillery built alongside the grain plant; it was closed and later demolished in 1976 as demand shifted. Girvan itself continued to expand, and in 2007 William Grant & Sons built the Ailsa Bay malt distillery on the same site to secure malt whisky supply for its blends. Girvan has also become known for large-scale efficiency investment, including biogas and combined heat and power installations that make it one of the most energy-efficient distilleries in Scotland. Since 1966 the site has additionally produced Hendrick's Gin, one of the world's best-selling premium gins.
Girvan's grain spirit forms the backbone of William Grant & Sons' blended whiskies, including Grant's and Clan MacGregor. As a standalone single grain, Girvan is best known through Black Barrel, a single grain Scotch whisky bottled at 42% ABV that showcases the distillery's character, alongside occasional aged single grain releases and independent bottlings labelled simply "Girvan."
