Glen Albyn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that stood on Telford Street in Inverness, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1846 and was closed in 1983, with the buildings demolished in 1988. Most of its output went into blended whisky, making surviving single malt bottlings scarce and sought after by collectors today.
Glen Albyn was founded in 1846 by James Sutherland, then Provost of Inverness, on a site by the Muirtown Basin of the Caledonian Canal, drawing water from Loch Ness. The distillery had a difficult start: it was mothballed within a few years of opening (circa 1850–1852) and the buildings were used as a flour mill before being reconverted to whisky production in 1884. Glen Albyn was later acquired by its next-door neighbour, Glen Mhor distillery (founded by former Glen Albyn manager John Birnie), and the two sites operated in tandem for decades. The distillery saw further mothballing periods, including 1917–1919, reflecting the wider pressures on the Scotch whisky industry during and after the World Wars. In 1972, both Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor were acquired by The Distillers Company (DCL), the dominant Scotch whisky combine of the era.
Glen Albyn was closed in February 1983 by Scottish Malt Distillers as part of a wave of eleven distillery closures across Scotland driven by recession, industry over-production, and high duty and taxation — a shutdown that also claimed its neighbour Glen Mhor and cost the two Inverness sites 22 jobs. The distillery buildings were demolished in 1988 and the site was subsequently redeveloped, with little of the original distillery surviving today. Because the vast majority of Glen Albyn's production was destined for blends rather than sold as single malt, independent and official single malt bottlings are rare. Surviving bottles, including older vintages, regularly appear at specialist auction houses such as Bonhams and Whisky Auctioneer, where they command strong prices among collectors of "silent stills" whisky — malts from distilleries that no longer exist.
