Glen Grant Distillery, established in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant, stands as a pioneering icon in the heart of Rothes, Speyside, Scotland. Named after its founders, it holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery in Rothes, a town blessed with proximity to the River Spey and abundant barley fields, essential ingredients for crafting fine malt whisky.
The distillery's history is marked by continuous innovation and expansion. Originally equipped with four stills, Glen Grant increased its capacity significantly over the years, expanding to six stills in 1973 and further to ten in 1977, although currently eight are in operation. Glen Grant's commitment to quality and innovation extends to its production methods, including the adoption of electric light, tall slender stills, and purifiers under the visionary leadership of James 'The Major' Grant, who inherited the distillery in the late 19th century.
Glen Grant's whisky quickly gained renown for its fresh, malty flavor profile and clarity of color, owing to Major Grant's forward-thinking techniques. This reputation contributed to its status as the leading single malt in Italy and the second best-selling single malt globally.
Ownership of Glen Grant has transitioned through several notable phases. From the Grants' family ownership through various amalgamations and acquisitions, including periods under Seagram Company Ltd. and Pernod Ricard, the distillery found a home under the Campari Group in 2005, solidifying its place in the Italian market.
Today, Glen Grant remains a cornerstone of Scotland's whisky heritage and a key attraction on Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, welcoming visitors to tour its historic premises and warehouses. Its legacy as a bastion of Speyside whisky craftsmanship continues to resonate globally, testament to its enduring commitment to quality and innovation in single malt Scotch whisky production.
