Glen Mhor Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that was located in Inverness, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1892 and was closed in 1983, with its buildings demolished in 1986. It was notable for remaining water-powered years after most Scottish distilleries had switched to steam, and for its close historical ties to the neighbouring Glen Albyn distillery.
Glen Mhor Distillery was established in 1892 by John Birnie and Charles Mackinlay on a site in Inverness between the Caledonian Canal and the railway line, drawing its process water from Loch Ness. It was built directly adjacent to the older Glen Albyn Distillery, and the two sites were closely linked for most of their history: Birnie and Mackinlay's firm, Mackinlay & Birnie, went on to acquire Glen Albyn itself in 1920, bringing both distilleries under common ownership. Glen Mhor was unusual in remaining water-powered into the 1950s, well after most of its contemporaries had converted to steam power, and it installed Saladin box maltings in 1954 to modernise production. Ownership passed to The Distillery Company Ltd in 1972, a subsidiary of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) group, whose Scotch whisky interests were later absorbed into Diageo.
Glen Mhor was one of several Highland malt distilleries closed by the Distillers Company Limited during the industry-wide contraction of the early 1980s, when falling demand for blended Scotch left many distilleries surplus to requirements. Production ceased in 1983, and the distillery buildings, along with those of neighbouring Glen Albyn, were demolished in 1986; the site was subsequently cleared and no trace of the working distillery survives today. Because no new spirit has been made since 1983, original Glen Mhor single malt bottlings are finite and increasingly hard to find, and independent bottlings from the 1960s-80s are actively sought by collectors interested in Scotland's "lost" or "ghost" distilleries.
