Glen Nevis Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Glen Nevis Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located near Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1877 by Duncan MacCallum and ceased production in 1923, with the site sold off in 1924. It was one of more than twenty distilleries that operated in Campbeltown during the town's Victorian-era boom as one of Scotland's most concentrated whisky-producing centres.

History

Glen Nevis Distillery was built in 1877 by Duncan MacCallum, trading as D. MacCallum & Co, on land acquired from the Gallowhill farm on the edge of Campbeltown. It was established during the peak of Campbeltown's 19th-century whisky boom, when the town's abundant coal, barley, peat and sea access for shipping supported one of the highest concentrations of distilleries anywhere in Scotland. When the whisky writer Alfred Barnard visited Campbeltown's distilleries in the 1880s for his survey The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom (1887), Glen Nevis's annual output was recorded at around 100,000 gallons.

Ownership changed hands repeatedly in the decades that followed. In 1887 the distillery was absorbed into The Scotch Whisky Distillers Limited, a consortium that also controlled the Dean, Gleniffer and Ben Wyvis distilleries; that company was wound up in 1889. Glen Nevis subsequently passed to Stewart, Galbraith & Co, the owners of the neighbouring Glen Scotia distillery, before being acquired in 1919 by West Highland Malt Distilleries Limited, along with five other Campbeltown distilleries.

Closure & Legacy

West Highland Malt Distilleries Limited went into voluntary liquidation in 1923, and Glen Nevis ceased production that year along with the other distilleries in its group. The site was put up for sale again in 1924 and sold for just £500, but distilling was never resumed. Part of its former warehousing went on to a second life for whisky storage: in 1955, A. Gillies & Co Distillers bought the disused warehouses of both Ardlussa and Glen Nevis in Campbeltown. Glen Nevis was one of the many casualties of the collapse of the Campbeltown whisky industry in the 1920s, which saw the town's distillery count fall from over twenty to a handful within a decade. No original Glen Nevis bottlings are known to survive on the market today, and independent releases or tasting notes are essentially nonexistent, making the distillery largely a historical footnote rather than a name collectors can actively pursue.
