Glenaden Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Glenaden Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery located near Old Deer, in the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1845 and was closed in 1915 after changing hands twice. Reputed to have been one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, it ran on just two pot stills alongside a working farm and brewery.

History

Glenaden was established in 1845 on a farmstead on the west side of Old Deer, on a site earlier known as the Biffie Brewery. Founded by Messrs. Milne and Co., it produced a pure malt whisky at a modest annual output of around 12,000 gallons — small enough that it was reputed at times to be Scotland's smallest working distillery. Ownership changed twice more in its lifetime: George Wilson and Co. took over in 1882, followed by Yelton, Ogilvie and Co. in 1903. Under its later proprietors the site diversified beyond whisky, also brewing stout, a harvest beer, and a herb ale said to follow a recipe traced back roughly a thousand years to the nearby Abbey of Old Deer.

Closure & Legacy

Glenaden closed in 1915, reportedly overwhelmed by rising operating and distribution costs. Much of the working distillery and brewery buildings subsequently fell into ruin, though the farmstead's B-listed farmhouse survives, along with traces of the millponds and water lade that once powered the site. Because production ceased well over a century ago, no verified original Glenaden bottlings are known to circulate among collectors today. The name is now mostly encountered through an independent bottler that has since adopted it for modern single and vatted malt releases — unconnected to the original Old Deer site — and through local heritage interest in one of Aberdeenshire's smaller "lost distilleries."
