Glenburgie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Alves in Moray, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1810 and is currently owned by Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky arm of Pernod Ricard. Glenburgie's fruity, honeyed malt forms the heart of the Ballantine's blend and has largely remained a blender's secret, with only limited official single malt bottlings ever released.
Glenburgie's origins trace back to 1810, when a distillery known as Kilnflat operated on the site, though official licensing records only begin in 1829. The distillery fell on hard times and closed in 1870, reopening under the name Glenburgie in 1878 under Charles Kay, before passing around 1880 into the hands of Alex Fraser and Company. The business was liquidated in 1925 and the distillery stood silent between 1927 and 1935; during this period Margaret Nichol managed the site and is widely credited as the first female manager of any Scotch whisky distillery. Hiram Walker bought Glenburgie in 1936 and returned it to production.
In 1958, two Lomond stills were installed alongside the traditional pot stills to produce a heavier-style malt marketed separately as Glencraig; these ran until 1981, when they were removed and replaced with conventional pot stills. Ownership passed through Allied Lyons (1987) and Allied Domecq before Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq in 2005, folding Glenburgie into its Chivas Brothers subsidiary. Production at the old distillery buildings ceased in 2000, and the site was almost entirely rebuilt in 2003–2004, retaining only the original stills' design; a further two stills were added in 2006, taking capacity to around 4.2 million litres of pure alcohol per year. Today Glenburgie is one of the largest-capacity distilleries in Scotland and a key malt component of Ballantine's and Old Smuggler blended whiskies.
The vast majority of Glenburgie's output goes into blends, chiefly Ballantine's and Old Smuggler, and the distillery has no permanent visitor-facing core range of its own. The main official single malt expression is Ballantine's The Glenburgie 15 Year Old (40% ABV), released as part of Ballantine's series showcasing the malt whiskies at the heart of its blend; independent bottlers such as Signatory Vintage have also released occasional single cask Glenburgie (and historic Glencraig) expressions.
