Glencadam Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Glencadam Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Brechin, Angus, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1825 and is currently owned by Angus Dundee Distillers plc. Glencadam is one of the few distilleries still using traditional worm tub condensers, a method that contributes to the distinctive character of its single malt.

History

Glencadam Distillery was established in 1825 by the merchant George Cooper, roughly 200 yards from the earlier Brechin Distillery. David Scott took over as proprietor in 1827, but by 1837 he was unable to find a buyer and mothballed the site. The distillery lay silent for around fifteen years until Alexander Miln Thompson purchased it in 1852 and returned it to production.

In 1891, Gilmour, Thompson & Company Limited acquired Glencadam and used its spirit in their Royal Blend blended whisky. Ownership passed through several major drinks companies during the 20th century, including Hiram Walker from 1954 and George Ballantine & Son Ltd from 1956, before the distillery came under Allied Domecq in 1988. Allied Domecq mothballed Glencadam in 2000, and it remained closed until 2003, when independent bottler and blender Angus Dundee Distillers plc bought and reopened the site. Angus Dundee has run Glencadam since, using much of its output for its own blends while building up an official single malt range, and celebrated the distillery's 200th anniversary in 2025.
