Glengilp Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery that stood on the banks of the Crinan Canal at Ardrishaig, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1831 by Henry Hoey & Company and closed permanently in 1937. Over its lifetime the distillery traded under several names, including Glendarroch and, from 1887, Glenfyne, reflecting a long succession of owners.
Glengilp was established in 1831 by Henry Hoey & Company on a three-acre site with a 500-foot frontage onto the Crinan Canal, giving it direct access for shipping malt, coal and finished spirit. Ownership changed hands repeatedly over the following decades: Peter McNee & Co. took over around 1852-1855, when the distillery was recorded as producing about 1,000 gallons of whisky a week; William Hay & Co. ran it through the 1857-1869 period under various partnerships; and William Smyth & Co. bought it in 1873 for £5,000, only to be declared bankrupt in 1878. Kemp & Co. resumed production in 1879, and William Gillies operated the site from around 1884 to 1887. Output grew substantially across this period, reportedly reaching around 80,000 gallons a year by 1886 and a stated capacity of 150,000 gallons by 1891.
In 1887 the distillery was acquired by Scotch Whisky Distillers Limited and renamed Glenfyne, though it was also known locally as Glendarroch. Blending and grain-whisky group Robertson & Baxter Ltd took control in 1919 and continued to run it into the 1930s.
Glengilp (by then known as Glenfyne) ceased whisky production in 1937, though its warehouses continued to be used for spirit storage for some years afterward. The distillery buildings survived, disused, for nearly six decades before being demolished in 1996, when the site was redeveloped for residential housing. No trace of the original stone quadrangle distillery remains today. Because production ended so long ago and records from its many changes of ownership are thin, surviving original bottlings are extremely rare and would be of significant interest to collectors of historic Scotch whisky, though none are known to circulate on the current market.
