Glenlochy Distillery is a Highland Scotch whisky distillery that was located in Fort William, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1898 and was permanently closed in 1983, with most of its buildings demolished in 1991. Glenlochy is one of Scotland's "lost distilleries," and surviving bottlings are prized by collectors.
Glenlochy Distillery was established in 1898 by David McAndie of Nairn, built on the banks of the River Nevis at the foot of Ben Nevis, which supplied the water used in production. Like many distilleries of the era, it struggled through economic downturns and the disruption of the First World War, and production ceased in 1919, leaving the site dormant for almost two decades.
In 1937, Canadian entrepreneur Joseph Hobbs — a colourful figure who also introduced cattle ranching to the Highlands — acquired and reopened the distillery, and it continued operating through the Second World War. In 1954 ownership passed to the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), the forerunner of what is today Diageo, under whose stewardship Glenlochy continued to produce Highland single malt whisky, most of which went into blends.
Glenlochy was closed in 1983 as part of a wider industry contraction driven by a severe oversupply of malt whisky, a period that saw a number of Scottish distilleries mothballed or shut for good. Unlike some closed distilleries that were preserved or repurposed, most of Glenlochy's buildings were demolished in 1991 and the site was redeveloped, leaving little trace of the original works. Because production ended permanently and the distillery no longer exists, original single malt bottlings of Glenlochy — largely released as older-age independent and official bottlings from stock laid down before 1983 — are increasingly rare and sought after by whisky collectors and enthusiasts of "silent" or "ghost" distilleries.
