Glenramskill Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Glenramskill Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery that stood about 1.5 miles south of Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1828 and was closed in 1854. It is one of the many short-lived distilleries from Campbeltown's 19th-century whisky boom, and no bottlings from it are known to survive today.

History

Glenramskill Distillery was established in 1828 by the firm McMurchy, Ralston & Co., during the period when Campbeltown was rapidly becoming one of Scotland's most densely packed whisky-producing towns, eventually home to around 30 licensed distilleries. Records indicate the business passed into the sole hands of Robert Ralston, who is recorded as running the distillery from 1837 until its closure. Little else about its day-to-day operation is documented, though an 1855 sale notice described it as capable of consuming 70 to 80 quarters of malt, or producing around 10 puncheons of spirit weekly, with a water supply sufficient to power all of its machinery.

Closure & Legacy

Glenramskill closed in 1854 following the death of its proprietor, Robert Ralston. The distillery and its equipment were advertised for sale in 1855 and were reportedly still on the market two years later, with no record that it ever reopened under new ownership. Like many of Campbeltown's smaller 19th-century distilleries that did not survive the industry's later consolidation, Glenramskill left no known surviving buildings, records of production volumes, or authenticated bottlings. Today it exists only as a historical footnote among the roughly 30 distilleries that once operated in and around the town.
