Glen Scotia Distillery, affectionately known as The Scotia or Old Scotia, is a producer of single malt Scotch whisky located in Campbeltown, Scotland. Founded in 1832, it is one of the three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown, which is recognized as the smallest whisky region in Scotland.
Glen Scotia Distillery was established in 1832 by Stewart & Galbraith and Company. Originally named "Scotia," the distillery was purchased by notable industrialist Duncan MacCallum in 1891, who added the large malting floors along High Street. In 1933, the distillery was acquired by the Bloch Brothers from the trustees of the late Duncan McCallum. Production was temporarily suspended during World War II but resumed in early 1945.
The distillery changed hands multiple times, being acquired by Hiram Walker and Sons of Dumbarton in 1954, A. Gilles in 1955, and eventually merging into Amalgamated Distilled Products (ADP) in 1970. In 1987, a management buyout led by Ian Lockwood resulted in the distillery operating under Gibson International. In 2014, the distillery was bought by the Loch Lomond Group, who have since invested heavily in the site, increasing production capacity, opening new warehouses, and developing a distillery visitor center.
Glen Scotia Distillery maintains much of its original 1830s design, including the mash tun, stillroom, and dunnage warehouse. The distillery is staffed by a small team of eight employees, including a distillery manager, assistant distillery manager, visitor center manager, and five distillery operators.
The distillery's water source is Crosshill Loch in Campbeltown. It uses a mix of unpeated, medium peated, and heavily peated malt barley. Glen Scotia has one wash still with a capacity of 11,800 liters and one spirit still with an 8,600-liter capacity. The copper pot stills are onion-shaped with wide, short necks. The distillery also has nine stainless steel washbacks. Annual production levels are around 700,000 liters.
Glen Scotia produces two styles of whisky: peated and non-peated. The distillery's range includes:
The distillery also produces special bottlings for events such as the Campbeltown Malt Whisky Festival and the "Icons of Campbeltown" series, with the first release being the 12-year-old "The Mermaid" in October 2023. Glen Scotia’s whiskies typically feature the Campbeltown flavor profile of toffee, maritime influence, and a hint of smoke.
Glen Scotia’s whiskies have received numerous accolades at prestigious award ceremonies, including the San Francisco World Spirits Awards, International Wine & Spirits Competition, World Whisky Awards, International Spirits Challenge, and The Scotch Whisky Masters. In 2021, Glen Scotia was crowned the producer of the World's Best Whisky at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was awarded Best Scottish Whisky Distillery at the Scottish Whisky Awards, marking the first time any distillery has won both titles in the same year.
The Glen Scotia Distillery is open to visitors, offering tours and tastings that highlight its rich history and traditional whisky-making process. The distillery's visitor center includes a Victorian-style shop where guests can purchase whisky, branded merchandise, and other goods. The site also features two hives in the courtyard where resident bees produce honey, adding to the unique charm of this historic distillery.
