Glentarras Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery located near Langholm in Dumfries and Galloway, in the Lowland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1839 by James Kennedy and closed around the time of the First World War. It was one of the Lowland distilleries visited by Alfred Barnard in the 1880s and documented in his 1887 book The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom.
Glentarras Distillery was established in 1839 by James Kennedy, who had previously been associated with the nearby Langholm Distillery. The distillery passed through several hands over the following decades: in 1875 Joseph Twentyman and Co Limited was registered in England, and by 1878 the business was operating as the Glentarras Distillery Co with Twentyman as manager. In 1903 the distillery was acquired by Seager, Evans and Co, a London-based gin producer.
By the time Alfred Barnard toured the distillery in the 1880s, Glentarras had an annual output of up to 75,000 gallons and was noted for producing a "highly and richly flavoured" malt whisky, typical of the fuller-bodied style associated with some Lowland producers of the era, in contrast to the lighter Lowland malts more commonly described.
Glentarras fell out of production around the outbreak of the First World War, a fate shared by many smaller Scottish distilleries of the period as wartime restrictions on grain use and shifting demand made continued operation unviable. Remaining whisky stocks were sold off, and the distillery buildings were demolished in 1930, leaving little physical trace of the site today. As with many 19th-century Lowland distilleries lost before living memory, no original Glentarras bottlings are known to survive in the collectors' market, and detailed records of its output are scarce. The Glentarras name lives on today as a brand used by an independent whisky company for sourcing, blending, and bottling — but this modern venture is a separate enterprise and not a reopened continuation of the original 19th-century distillery site.
