Glenugie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that once stood near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1831 and closed permanently in 1983, with the buildings demolished in 1985. Glenugie holds the distinction of being mainland Scotland's most easterly distillery, and its whisky is now a rare, sought-after relic of a closed distillery.
Glenugie was established in 1831 by Donald McLeod & Co Ltd on a site originally known as Invernettie, drawing its water from the Wellington Spring. Its history was notably stop-start: production ceased for most of the First World War, the distillery reopened only briefly in 1923–1924 under Glenugie Distillery Ltd, and then lay dormant from 1925 until 1937. That year it was revived by Seager Evans & Co Ltd (later part of Long John International), and in 1956 new owner Schenley International modernised the plant, installing a single wash still and single spirit still. Ownership passed through Whitbread & Co and eventually to Allied Distillers as the industry consolidated in the later twentieth century. Throughout its working life Glenugie was a small, largely single-malt producer whose output was used mainly for blending, with only occasional official bottlings released under its own name.
Glenugie was one of roughly a dozen Scottish malt distilleries shut down in 1983 amid a severe industry downturn caused by oversupply and falling demand for blended Scotch. Unlike many silent distilleries that remained mothballed, Glenugie's buildings were demolished in 1985; the site was later redeveloped by engineering firm Score Group plc for its workshops, and only the distillery's Category B-listed windmill tower survives as a physical reminder of the site. Because production stopped decades ago and stock is finite, original Glenugie single malt bottlings (including independent releases from bottlers such as Signatory, Cadenhead's and Gordon & MacPhail) are considered collectible rarities among whisky enthusiasts, with prices reflecting their scarcity as remnants of a distillery that no longer exists.
