Great Northern Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery located in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. It was founded in 2015 and is currently owned by John Teeling through Great Northern Distillery Ltd. It is the largest independently owned distillery in Ireland and one of the few in the country producing both malt and grain whiskey at a single site.
The distillery occupies the site of the former Great Northern Brewery on Carrick Road, Dundalk, which opened in 1896 and grew into Ireland's second-largest brewery, producing Harp Lager, Smithwick's, and other beers under successive owners including Guinness and Diageo. Diageo closed the brewery on 30 September 2013. John Teeling — who had previously founded Cooley Distillery in 1987 and rebuilt Kilbeggan Distillery before selling both businesses in 2012 — acquired the site and converted it into a whiskey distillery with an investment of around €10 million, drawing on the same Cooley Peninsula spring water that had supplied the brewery. Distilling began on 31 July 2015, and the first three-year-matured whiskey from the site was ready in 2018. Rather than building a single flagship consumer brand, Great Northern Distillery developed as a large-scale bulk and contract producer, supplying whiskey to several hundred private-label and independent brands worldwide.
Great Northern Distillery operates primarily as a bulk and contract producer rather than marketing a large own-label range: it distils grain, triple malt, double malt, peated malt, and single pot still whiskey, alongside poitín and gin, supplying more than 400 private-label and third-party brands globally. Its own consumer-facing label is Burke's Irish Whiskey. The distillery reports an annual production capacity of around 16 million litres of spirit and holds over 500,000 casks maturing in bond, making it the largest independently owned distillery in Ireland.
