Hazelburn Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Hazelburn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that once stood in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1825 and was closed and demolished in the mid-1920s; the Hazelburn name lives on today as a triple-distilled single malt produced at the nearby Springbank Distillery. In its heyday it was the largest distillery in Campbeltown, a town that was once the self-styled "whisky capital of the world."

History

Hazelburn was founded in 1825 by the Reid family and was originally known as Riechlachan (or Rieclachan) distillery. In 1871 it was acquired by the Greenlees brothers, who also held interests in Lagavulin on Islay and the Dalaruan distillery in Campbeltown. Under the partnership of Greenlees and Colvill, formed in 1881, Hazelburn grew into a substantial operation: by 1886 it employed 22 people and produced around 192,000 gallons of whisky a year, making it the largest of Campbeltown's many distilleries at the time. The distillery's standing was such that Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont was given a personal tour by Samuel Greenlees during a visit in 1893.

Closure & Legacy

Greenlees & Colvill fell into liquidation in 1921, part of the broader collapse of Campbeltown's whisky industry in the early 20th century, driven by Prohibition-era loss of the crucial American export market, overproduction of poor-quality spirit by some local producers, and the general economic downturn of the 1920s. Mitchell & Co. (the family behind Springbank) purchased the Hazelburn site around 1925–1926, after which the distillery was shut down and its buildings demolished, and no original structures survive today. Genuine bottlings from the historic Hazelburn distillery are now extremely rare collector's items. The name itself was not lost, however: since 2005, Springbank Distillery — still run by the Mitchell family's successors, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. — has produced a triple-distilled single malt under the Hazelburn label, keeping the name and Campbeltown's distilling heritage alive.
