Highland Park distillery, established in 1798, is the second northernmost single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Scotland. Located in Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands, it has a storied history and is renowned for its distinctive whisky, influenced by the local environment and traditional practices.
The distillery was founded by Magnus Eunson, who was a butcher and church officer by day and an illicit distiller and whisky smuggler by night. In 1798, Eunson was caught illegally distilling whisky on the site. It wasn't until 1826, nearly 30 years later, that Highland Park received an official licence to distill whisky.
Contrary to what its name might suggest, Highland Park is not named after the Scottish Highlands but rather the area called 'High Park' where the distillery was established, which is distinguished from a nearby lower area.
Highland Park uses local peat, which is rich in heather, giving the whisky its unique flavor. The whisky is aged in sherry casks made of American or European oak, sourced from Oloroso sherry producers in Spain. The distillery's production process remains traditional, preserving methods that have been used for generations.
Highland Park has garnered significant acclaim in the whisky world. It has been named "The Best Spirit in the World" three times by F. Paul Pacult, a renowned expert on distilled spirits. Its 25-year-old whisky was the first spirit to receive a perfect 100-point score at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. In 2018, Highland Park's special releases, The Light and The Dark, both received Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Additionally, from 2016 to 2019, Highland Park won the Chairman's Trophy for Best in Category at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
In February 2023, Highland Park released a 54-year-old Single Malt Scotch whisky to celebrate its 225th anniversary. The distillery continues to produce some peated spirit annually and stores its casks in one of the 23 warehouses next to the distillery.
Highland Park remains a cornerstone of the Orkney Islands' whisky tradition, balancing historical practices with modern acclaim.
