Imperial Distillery — Speyside Single Malt Whisky

Imperial Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that stood at Carron, on the River Spey in Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1897 and was permanently closed and eventually demolished, with the Dalmunach distillery built on part of its site in 2015. Imperial spent more of its history mothballed than actually distilling, and its rarity today makes surviving bottlings prized among collectors.

History

Imperial distillery was built in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie, who also owned the neighbouring Dailuaine distillery, on a site at Carron in Strathspey. The distillery was reportedly designed with grand ambitions — its name and the imperial crown carved above the entrance reflected the optimism of the Victorian-era whisky boom. That boom collapsed almost immediately: the Pattison crash of 1898-99 devastated the Scotch whisky trade, and Imperial fell silent for two decades, from 1899 to 1919.

The distillery changed hands and passed into the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) group in 1925, but production remained erratic — it was mothballed again from 1925 until 1955. After reopening under DCL's operating subsidiaries, Imperial ran through the mid-20th century whisky expansion, though it continued to close and reopen periodically, including a further silent spell from 1985 to 1991. In 1989 the distillery was sold to Allied Distillers. It reopened briefly in the 1990s and released its only widely known official bottling, a 15-year-old single malt, in the mid-1990s, before falling silent again in 1998, this time for good.

Ownership passed to Pernod Ricard in 2005 when the French drinks group acquired Allied Domecq, with the site subsequently managed by Pernod Ricard's Scotch whisky arm, Chivas Brothers. The old Imperial buildings were demolished in 2013, and a new, architecturally distinctive distillery, Dalmunach, was built on part of the site and opened in 2015 — its onion-shaped spirit stills a deliberate nod to the distillery that once stood there.

Closure & Legacy

Imperial's history was defined by repeated mothballing rather than continuous production, with silent periods covering roughly two-thirds of its existence between 1899 and 1998. It closed for the final time in 1998 amid a broader industry downturn, and after standing derelict for over a decade it was demolished in 2013. Its site at Carron was redeveloped as Dalmunach distillery, which opened in 2015 to produce malt whisky primarily for Chivas Brothers' blends.

Because Imperial released so little official single malt — essentially just a 15-year-old expression in the mid-1990s — original distillery bottlings are scarce. Independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail and Signatory Vintage have released Imperial single malts over the years, and these bottlings, along with the rare official releases, are sought after by collectors precisely because the distillery no longer exists and no more spirit will ever be produced under the Imperial name.
