Invergordon Distillery is a single grain Scotch whisky distillery located in Invergordon, Easter Ross, in the Ross and Cromarty area of the Highlands, Scotland. Established in 1959, the distillery began operations in 1961 and has since become an integral part of the region's whisky production and heritage.
History and Background
The town of Invergordon, named after Sir William Gordon, a local laird in the 18th century, evolved from a commercial port into a naval port in the early 1900s. Today, it is one of Scotland’s busiest cruise ship ports, attracting an affluent audience of world travelers who use the Cromarty Firth harbour as a gateway to explore nearby attractions such as Loch Ness, Culloden, and several historic Highland castles.
Distillery Operations
Invergordon distillery is operated by Whyte & Mackay, which is owned by the Philippines-based Alliance Global. Alongside the Tamnavulin distillery in Speyside, Invergordon provides whisky for the company’s blended Scotch whisky brands. The distillery primarily produces grain whisky, which is a key component in many blended Scotch whiskies.
Expansion and Development
In July 2023, Whyte & Mackay announced a significant expansion of its whisky maturation complex at Invergordon. This development will double the footprint of the complex from 45.4 hectares to 92 hectares, highlighting the growing demand and the distillery’s commitment to increasing its production capacity.
Products
While the whisky from Invergordon is primarily used in blends, it is also recognized as a high-quality single grain Scotch whisky. The distillery's products are noted for their smooth and rich character, making them a hidden gem among grain whiskies.
Visitor Experience
Although the town of Invergordon itself is a popular destination for tourists, especially those arriving via cruise ships, the distillery provides a unique glimpse into the production of Scotch whisky. Visitors can learn about the distillation process and the history of whisky making in this picturesque part of the Highlands.

About Glenbotal
The idea of Glenbotal came to us naturaly: as whisky lovers, we were always on the lookout for new experiences in the whisky world. That’s why we created Glenbotal and became our very own first customers. We buy unique and hard to find spirits from auctions, ballots, and private collections.
