Inverleven Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Inverleven Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that stood in Dumbarton, on the north bank of the River Clyde, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1938 and was closed in 1991, with the site later demolished. Inverleven was built as a satellite malt distillery within the larger Dumbarton grain distillery complex, producing single malt fillings mainly for use in Ballantine's blended Scotch.

History

Inverleven was constructed in 1938 by Hiram Walker & Sons as part of its large Dumbarton distillery complex on the Clyde, drawing process water from Loch Lomond. Rather than operating as a standalone visitor-facing distillery, Inverleven functioned as an in-house malt whisky supplier, feeding new-make spirit into Ballantine's and other Allied blends produced at the wider Dumbarton site. Ownership passed to Allied Distillers as the whisky industry consolidated through the twentieth century, and the distillery continued limited production into the early 1990s.

Quick Facts

  • Region: Lowland
  • Founded: 1938
  • Owner: Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), successor to Allied Distillers
  • Status: Closed
  • Stills: Pot stills relocated to Bruichladdich distillery (for Port Charlotte production) after closure

Closure & Legacy

Inverleven was closed in 1991 as part of wider rationalisation of Allied Distillers' Scotch whisky production, and the wider Dumbarton complex it belonged to was fully shut down and later demolished, with the site cleared by 2006. In 2005, before demolition, Bruichladdich distillery on Islay acquired Inverleven's stills and installed them to help launch its heavily peated Port Charlotte range, giving the old Lowland distillery's equipment a second life. Because Inverleven rarely bottled single malt under its own name and instead supplied blends, original single-distillery releases are scarce and are sought after by collectors as a rare surviving record of a vanished Lowland distillery.
