Kinclaith Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in Glasgow, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1957 and was closed in 1975, after which the site was demolished. Kinclaith is notable as a rare "distillery within a distillery" — a small malt whisky operation built inside the grounds of the much larger Strathclyde grain distillery rather than as a standalone site.
Kinclaith was built in 1957 by Strathclyde & Long John Distilleries Ltd, the same company that operated the adjoining Strathclyde grain distillery in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, with malt production beginning around 1958. Rather than standing as an independent site, Kinclaith occupied a compact malt whisky unit tucked within the walls of its parent grain distillery, drawing its water from Loch Katrine. Ownership passed through the same corporate chain as Strathclyde itself: from the original Long John group to Whitbread & Co, and later to Allied Domecq. Its output was produced almost entirely for use in blended whisky, and the distillery operated for less than two decades — a short working life shared by several small malt distilleries built to feed blends during the Scotch whisky boom of the late 1950s and 1960s.
Kinclaith was closed in 1975 and demolished shortly afterward, with its former footprint absorbed back into the surrounding Strathclyde grain distillery complex, which continues to operate today under Chivas Brothers. Because Kinclaith malt was distilled for roughly 17 years and used mainly for blending, very little was ever bottled as a single malt. The small number of surviving casks and independent bottlings released from the 1960s and early 1970s stock are now scarce, and their value has risen substantially, making Kinclaith one of Scotland's genuinely "lost" Lowland distilleries and a name prized by collectors of rare Scotch.
